A seminar with Prof. Dorothy Kenny and Damien Hansen
State-of-the-art neural machine translation (NMT) is already being used in literary translation, and speculation is rife on how large language models (LLMs) will impact the field. In this workshop we explain the basic techniques that underlie both technologies, explore how NMT systems have been optimized for or otherwise applied in literary translation, and provide early indications of what LLMs might offer the literary translator. We zoom in on the particular professional, legal, ethical and aesthetic issues that arise for literary translators and their work.
Dorothy Kenny is full professor of translation studies at Dublin City University. Her current research interests include corpus-based analyses of translation and translator style, literary applications of machine translation and approaches to the teaching of translation technology. Her most recent book is the open-access edited volume Machine translation for everyone: empowering users in the age of artificial intelligence (Language Science Press, 2022). She is co-editor of the journal Translation Spaces.
Damien Hansen is a freelance translator and PhD candidate at the University of Liège and Grenoble Alpes University. After graduating in Modern Languages and Literatures, Translation, and Computational Linguistics, he is now pursuing a joint doctorate in Translation Studies (within the CIRTI) and in Computer Science (within the LIG/GETALP team). His work mainly focuses on literary machine translation, but other areas of interest include computer-assisted literary translation, the evolution and reception of translation technologies, as well as game studies.
